Colleen Odegaard NBC Charlotte Today Cake
Serving as one of the larger milestones for us, we were asked to develop this almond birthday cake for Colleen Odegaard, the host of Charlotte Today which can be seen at 11:00AM weekday mornings on NBC. We are honored to be one of three bakeries that were selected to come onto the program in celebration of Colleen’s birthday. After a little insight from the show’s producer on what Colleen like to do in life, I did a little deeper investigation of Colleen’s interests, passions and hobbies and this is where the design was inspired.
The story behind the cake has to do with Colleen’s favorite place to shop, her passion for running and finalized with a little known fact that she’s been known to partake in the skills of battling her sons with Star Wars light sabers. The cake was supposed to be large enough to serve 25 people as well as be totally unique. I think we achieved that with our design. The cake at the base represents a box from Colleen’s favorite store, the Jewel Box, located in South Charlotte. The second layer is modeled to reflect Colleen’s passion for bicycling & our continued support for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. The third element is a Star Wars light saber penetrating all of the way through the center of both cakes. That’s not all. There is a live smoke effect at the top of the cake and disperses in a way that makes the light saber appear to be cutting through the center of the cake because every son dreams of trying that in one way or another.
Bike Cake for 24 Hours of Booty Benefit
Every July a few thousand extraordinary cyclists in three U.S. cities get together for a 24 hour bike ride in their effort to raise money for cancer related charities in their respective cities. They also are contributing to the Lance Armstrong LIVESTRONG Foundation. The ride is known as “The 24 Hours of Booty” and you will have visit here in order to figure out what the name is all about. This bike cake is a replica of the organizations logo which served up to 175 guests at the “Jeans & Jewels” benefit auction that we are proud to contribute to. The rear bike wheel is Vanilla cake and the other wheel is Chocolate cake while the “rider” is a combination of both. Everything is covered with a thick layer of our signature butter cream icing and sealed with a layer of fondant. The graphics are edible sugar paper (along with edible ink of course). If you would like to donate to the charity, we welcome you to visit their site here. Pictures from the event will be posted soon.
LIVESTRONG Cake
This custom cake is our first in a few we hope to be able to do for a national organization (YES, the cake was offered at a reduced rate). TEAM MOXIE is a group of adventure bicycle riders based here in the Charlotte area. This custom cake was inspired by the Lance Armstrong Foundation and their “LIVESTRONG” campaign. TEAM MOXIE will be participating in the July 24th thru 25th, 2009 Lance Armstrong foundation’s 24 Hours of Booty bike ride for cancer research. The cake features a yellow band around it’s perimeter as well as grass and a lakefront. The only thing NOT edible on this cake is the Bicycle. Thanks to one of my facebook fans & fellow “Loweser”, Stacy for allowing us the privilege of giving us free reign on designing this fondant/butter cream iced chocolate cake. Cake serves 9-12 people.
