NBC Charlotte Today Video

Serving as one of the larger milestones for us, we were asked to develop this almond birthday cake for Colleen Odegaard, the host of Charlotte Today which can be seen at 11:00AM weekday mornings on NBC.  We are honored to be one of three bakeries that were selected to come onto the program in celebration of Colleen’s birthday.  After  a little insight from the show’s  producer on what Colleen like to do in life,  I did a little deeper investigation of Colleen’s interests, passions and hobbies and this is where the design was inspired.

Charlotte Today NBC Cake

The story behind the cake has to do with Colleen’s favorite place to shop, her passion for running and finalized with a little known fact that she’s been known to partake in the skills of battling her sons with  Star Wars light sabers. The cake was supposed to be large enough to serve 25 people as well as be totally unique.  I think we achieved that with our design.  The cake at the base represents a box from Colleen’s favorite store, the Jewel Box, located in South Charlotte.  The second layer is modeled to reflect  Colleen’s passion for bicycling & our continued support for the Lance Armstrong Foundation.  The third element is a Star Wars light saber penetrating all of the way through the center of both cakes.  That’s not all. There is a live smoke effect at the top of the cake and disperses in a way that makes the light saber appear to be cutting through the center of the cake because every son dreams of trying that in one way or another.

Fire Truck SUV Cake

Fire Truck SUV Cake

Always a kids favorite, this Fire Truck SUV cake was inspired by a member of the Concord, NC Fire Department who discovered Kenfections for the first time.  Sonya needed a particular almond cake that had buttercream icing for a bridal shower.  After testing a couple of different varieties of cake along with our secret recipe icing, Sonya and her team selected the combination that was sure to be a hit.  The flavor was just that, A HIT.   This fire truck SUV came in at just over 25 pounds and had four separate layers all internally supported without the use of krispy treats as many others are doing today to save time and money.  As always, we never sacrifice quality and the results show.  Feel free to view the feedback of this unique and flavorful cake from none other than Sonya and her team themselves, here.

Rubber Ducks Baby Shower Cake

This Rubber Ducks Baby Shower themed cake was designed for one of our returning clients who is throwing a baby shower at the office for a friend.  This golden yellow cake is triple stacked with butter cream icing between each layer. The bubbles are edible but the two rubber ducks are obviously not.  This cake serves up to 15 “comfortably”.

Bowling Birthday Cake

While this bowling cake experienced a terrible fate in the end, we’re proud to introduce the creation for yet another new client of Kenfections. This double layered bowling themed birthday cake features almond flavored cake covered with a super think layer of our signature butter cream icing and finished off with fondant decorations.  This bowling themed cake serves up to 15 people.

The terrible fate explained:  On my way to delivering the above cake in all it’s glory, a little 7 year old tricycle motor on a bicycle thought it would be neat to pull out into the road in front of my car.  Rather than mow the little turd down, I chose to hit the brakes. Let me take you back a few months ago when the Christmas Story was on for 24 hours straight.  Recall Ralphie’s response when he tossed the lugnuts into the air while his dad was changing the tire on that cold winter night. I believe it was “OHHHHHHHHHH FUUUUUUUUUUUDGE” except I too didn’t exactly say “FUDGE”.  Anti-lock brakes and a cake in the same vehicle don’t mix.  The cake crashed into the dashboard and broke into a thousand little cake pieces. The bulk of the creation remained in place but all of the gum paste & fondant work was pulverized. Needless to say, I didn’t have the heart to charge this brand new customer.  I forgot to mention, we were just two blocks from the customer’s house!!!!

47 pound Ambulance cake

47 pound Ambulance cake

This monster of a cake weighed in right at 47 pounds and is covered in a layer of fondant.  The wheels are solid chocolate. This cake is for a surprise birthday for a new client of Kenfections, Liz G.  The plan was to feed 50 people but it came in right around 80 servings.  I’ll post photos from the party just to give you an idea of the scale of this custom cake creation.
