Our History
In an effort to be completely transparent, my true passion in life is auto racing which was rooted in my first go-cart at age 8. Given the opportunities of driving stock cars at many of NASCAR’s fastest tracks as well as attending a few hundred races, the highlight of my racing life was meeting the legend AJ Foyt a couple years ago. When I informed him that I named my first born son after him, he replied as only AJ would: “Now, what the hell did you go and do that to the kid for?”
So Racing? Cakes? Where does all of this tie together?
Since earning that Marketing degree in the early 90′s, I have been fortunate enough to be involved in a number of businesses big & small. From my marketing background with a large specialty coffee retailer to the lessons I later gained (as well as a few pounds) in the gourmet donuts industry, in 2009 my wife DARED me to take a cake class that she was enrolled in. Each of the courses turned out to be highly educational. Even though I picked up quite a few techniques around cake decorating, what I didn’t expect to pick up was many old school baking secrets that a small group of ladies from Guyana to China shared with me over the subsequent courses that I completed in 2009. Huge kudos go to Alishia M. who was a fantastic instructor.
A thousand or so bucks later after acquiring all of the tools, materials and gadgets as well as a ton of practice, a few of my Marketing co-workers at Lowe’s Home Improvement in Mooresville, NC caught wind of what I was doing on the weekends and began to place orders one after the other. Many of the early cakes you see on the site are cakes that came from my coworkers word of mouth.
I was trying to figure out a way to leverage my deeper passion, auto racing into the cake hobby. Ding! IDEA. “Hmm, why not make a cake for a driver?”, Lowe’s has one. He also happens to be the top driver in the series for the past 4 years! I quickly received the honor of building a cake for 4 time NASCAR Champion Jimmie Johnson. See here.
Since then, Kenfections has been quite rewarding and I must thank my wife for not only introducing me to the cake industry but watching the kids when we have critical production deadlines to meet.
While we continue to earn clients across Charlotte and the southeastern U.S., I do hope to one day build Kenfections into a custom design cake shop that people across the U.S. insist their cakes ONLY come from us. (plus hand the business off to whichever one of my kids gets the spark for it) We welcome you to become a fan of ours on Facebook where we announce FREE offers and promotions exclusively to our fans.
Sincerely, Ken
